Hatchet is an adventure story about desperate struggles for survival, however, it is also about discovering the hidden strengths in oneself. It was certainly an intense, fast, and exciting read. The novel is a coming of age story of a boy called Brian who must confront both physical and psychological challenges in order to grow and discover himself. He was forced to survive in the woods of Canada where he becomes a whole new person. Brian greatly changed in the way he views nature, he became much more sensitive towards others, and he treats the world around him differently. He will be forced to take measures that he would never even have imagined if he wants to live while coping with the growing fear that he will never be rescued. When reading this book, the author’s combination of third-person narrative with Brian's feelings and thoughts pulled me into the story. Along the way, I discovered themes of hope, perseverance, and self-realization in both Brian and myself. Brian’s experience helped me understand a completely different perspective on life. This novel had cleansed my soul and opened my eyes to the world. As a wise man once said, “Tough times bring out the best in people.”

Readers trying to find deep stories need look no further than Katherine Applegate's tale written from the perspective of a Silverback gorilla living in a shopping mall. The gorilla, Ivan, lives a simple, sad life with only a couple friends. The years of living behind a glass wall at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade has numbed Ivan to his own misery. I loved the way the author blended humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable story of friendship, art, and hope. I believe The One and Only Ivan addresses a very important and serious problem in today’s world: animal rights. Over the course of their lives, Ivan and his friends encounter many examples of both the best and the worst the human race has to offer. The animal characters in the story have all known cruelty throughout their lives, and as the readers see them for the gentle creatures they are, the violence against them is presented as completely unacceptable. The author wants to teach her readers and spread the idea that non-human animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives and that their most basic interests should be afforded the same consideration as similar interests of human beings. I certainly agree with Applegate, and I think humans should treat animals the same way they would want to be treated. Overall, I thought The One and Only Ivan was an excellent and meaningful novel that provides an enjoyable read and reaches out to a worldwide problem.

Reading The Scorch Trials was very pleasurable. The novel picked up right where The Maze Runner left off and it certainly started with great commotion and excitement, which catched my attention right away. I actually felt the author, James Dashner, had wrote an even better novel that the first one with non-stop action, unexpected twists and turns in every single chapter, and the big mystery of Wicked and the role of the gladers that remained unsolved throughout the story. I found it interesting to read about a future that had a massive global climate change and zombies. I also thought the author had done a great job describing the emotions and feelings of the characters constantly during his writing. There were parts of the novel that made me happy, nervous, excited, and angry as the story developed slowly. However, I felt The Scorch Trials could be improved with less mystery and a little more character development. I would certainly recommend this book to my friends who enjoy action-packed and mysterious stories.

The Kite Runner was a gripping and emotional story of betrayal and redemption, and the story had certainly thrilled and moved me at the same time. The author Khaled Hosseini told a story of Amir who struggled to find his place in the world because of the aftereffects and fallout from a series of traumatic childhood events. When reading the novel, I was introduced to a world of Afghan life, which I found very fascinating and interesting. When reading The Kite Runner, I found myself always thinking the author was actually reflecting and writing about his own life and experiences throughout his fiction story. I learned lots of lessons from reading The Kite Runner, and it truly was a very meaningful story. Throughout the actions, dialogs, and relationships of the characters, I read ideas on forgiveness and love. The most successful part of the book was that it had a great sense of fate and justice, and Amir had overcome evil in the end, despite all odds.

I really like the characters in the story and how they interact and develop their relationships and feelings towards each other. I feel really sad when one of the boy try to help Thomas and their friends but unfortunately died. I feel a bit nervous and funny when MinHo got strike by the thunder but than suddenly woke up again. The most scary thing I think that happen in the story is the cranks, I'm really afraid of zombies especially when there is a lot of them running crazy, those cranks really make me have a nightmare. But this story is really interesting and cool, it includes a lot of different feelings.
