The story revolves around Fern Arable, an eight-year-old girl. She was heartbroken when she found out that her father was planning to kill the weakest piglet from the litter. Fern convinced her father that the piglet deserved a chance to live and that she would take care of it. She named the piglet Wilbur and became very attached to him. As Wilbur grew bigger, Fern had to sell him to her uncle, Homer Zuckerman, who owned a barn full of animals that didn't welcome Wilbur.
