I'm sorry but there are reasons why Mei's mom was very hard on her. If you watched the movie, in the past she had huge fight with her mother (Mei's grandmother) which caused her to think she had let her down because she wasn't good enough. This also made her think she should not let this happen between her and Mei. But if you can see, she still loves her daughter Mei (just overprotective)
However, also many Asian parents are strict and wants their children to have good grades so it could help them in future. This does not mean they are literally the worst parents ever. They still love their child.
"Turning red" focuses on changing human emotions through the new character May presented by Disney and Pixar. It shows Mei who struggles to hide her true feelings which pops out several times a day, giving the audience the pleasure of seeing changes in emotions. The scenes of Mei's conflict over her true self, which is completely different from the good daughter that her parents expect brings out memories that anyone would have experienced at least once. I also loved how Mei is connected to Red Panda's active, curious, but sensitive and an emotional characteristics!
For those who are in Ukraine, stay safe and strong! Remember we're all with you <3
I also feel bad for some innocent Russian people... Not all of them are bad. They're suffering from low stocks in their country due to shut down of trading system or cards for banks ext. from other countries.
