Sydney, Australia

Thanks to its location, Australia is one of the first continents to welcome the new year. It is therefore not surprising that the fireworks at the iconic Sydney Harbor are always some the best and biggest in the world. This year, was no exception. Over 1.5 million people crammed along the edges of the harbor to cheer as world's most expensive firework display sparkled in the skies shooting up from building rooftops, barges and even the bridge itself.

Hong Kong, China

The city of Hong Kong also staged what was touted as its biggest celebration ever, with a $1.6mm USD display that mesmerized the over 100,000 people that had gathered to watch at the Victoria Harbour.

London, England

In London, over a quarter of a million people lined along the banks of the River Thames and counted down the final seconds of 2012 to the chimes of the clock inside the Big Ben. Then, it was time to witness the spectacular show that included blazing rockets launched off the river and streamers shooting out from Europe's tallest Ferris Wheel - The London Eye!

Dubai, UAE

In Dubai, thousands of people gathered to watch the explosions of color that zoomed out from the rooftop of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Synchronized and choreographed to a live performance by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, it was a spectacle like none other.

New York, USA

In New York, revelers spent hours waiting in the chilly 35°F temperatures to witness the world famous crystal ball drop and the spectacular firework display that followed. Illuminated with 2,256 LED lights, the ball which was adorned with thousands of Waterford crystals arranged in inspirational messages symbolizing peace and friendship, enthralled the crowds with its kaleidoscope of myriad colors and patterns.

Myanmar (Burma)

While the celebrations in Myanmar were lower key, comprising of 90,000 people getting together and counting down to the New Year, they were historic. That's because under the former military regime even something as harmless as that had not been allowed! Next year, they may even celebrate the occasion with some firework displays!
